BALINESE and US ARTISTS JOIN HANDS Bali’s most talented artists find ways to celebrate their island’s creative energy wherever they are. This was demonstrated last week in the United States when Made Wianta, Made Bandem and Suasti Bandem presented an extraordinary performance created during a four-month collaboration with Lynn Kremer at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Most of the dialogue is sung and spoken by a writer who is imprisoned in the hospital against his will[1]. This character was originally based on the late Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer, who was jailed under Soeharto’s regime for the political nature of his work. The set for Shackled Spirits was designed by the multi-talented Balinese artist Made Wianta[2]. His ingenious use of simple materials evokes the complex struggle of shackled spirits trying to free themselves from both their illnesses and their doctors. These abstract creations undergo spectacular transformations over the course of the performance. Initially they are seen only in silhouette, perched at the bottom of a white backdrop, like figures in a wayang puppet play. The puppets and the actors in this production are animated by the energetic choreography of Made Bandem and Suasti Bandem who have introduced audiences all over the world to the mysteries of Balinese dance[3]. In Shackled Spirits their dance steps capture the madness and the playfulness of mental patients by twisting traditional Balinese and Javanese dance steps into new variations. Another scene uses the syncopations of kecak chants and the melodies of Colin McPhee to simulate a music therapy session in which the patients tap out rhythms on a variety of pots, pans, and other household objects. Charles Eames was born in 1907 in Missouri. After being thrown out of Washington University partly for being “too modern” and supporting controversial designer Frank Lloyd Wright[5], he established his architectural office in 1930 and received a fellowship to Michigan’s Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he proceeded to become head of the design department. Design, to Charles, was more a never-ending process than an outcome. The emphasis on processes within the human mind is also evident in what the man called “the banana leaf parable”, which was inspired by eating habits in India. Yet people seen to be most sophisticated in their knowledge and means in fact go back to using the banana leaf, like those from the lowest case. “I am not prepared to say that the banana leaf that one eats off of is the same as the other eats off of, but it’s that process that has happened within the man that has changed the banana leaf,” Charles is known to have said of the philosophy. Those who are interested in exploring more of Charles and Ray’s thoughts can visit the Herman Miller Essential Eames Exhibition, which is currently being held at Gandaria City Mall, South Jakarta, until June 22[6] . Charles and Ray’s noted works outside furniture design include the documentary Powers of Ten, which portrays the scale of the universe based on an everyday scene of a picnic, and the exhibition Mathematica: A World of Numbers... and beyond, which to many succeeds in displaying the often puzzling science in a fun and attractive way through objects such as soap bubbles, light bulbs performing multiplication and tens of thousands of plastic balls. Demetrios said that the highlights of the exhibition include the interpretation of the house and the displayed “Mathematica” timeline, which tells the historical development of mathematical science. “We have some of the splints which for a young designer should be very inspiring to imagine that Charles and Ray made those in their apartment when they were just starting out, and I think its so easy to think that everything can be done through computers, but its important to also know to be reminded of the physicality of design, the physicality of human experiences,” he added, referring to the leg splints made of plywood that the couple designed in the early 1940s for injured servicemen. From the back of the hall, nine women entered the performance arena all in a row as the fragrance of incense permeated the air. Then the dancers dispersed, their graceful movements typical of Javanese classical dance, this time presenting a choreographic collection of the Mangkunegara Palace called Golek Montro to open the 2012 Mangkunegara Performing Arts exhibition in Surakarta recently. Golek Montro was created by Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Aryo (KGPAA) Mangkunegoro VII (1885-1944). The dance of almost 30 minutes duration portrays palace girls who are coming of age and paying attention to their makeup and grooming before welcoming noble guests. With all their grace at a slow pace, the dancers continued to offer smiling faces, thus attracting the audience that packed the palace hall. Interestingly, one of the Golek Montro performers was Japanese. Kaori Okado from Nagoya, Japan, has for years been learning Javanese classical dance in Yogyakarta and Surakarta[7]. She has also mastered Banyumas and Bali dancing styles. Of the Mangkunegara collection, Kaori is adept at 15 works. The next and more vigorous dance was Wireng Bandabaya, presented by four men with firm and valiant movements depicting the skill and courage of Mangkunegara soldiers and clad in uniforms complete with swords and shields. Some of the 10 creations appearing in the two-day show have indeed been modified into folk dances such as Wireng Bandabayan and Golek Montro, who is a relative of the Mangkunegaran family [8]. On the second day of the show, the evening program started with Beksan Panembromo with 150 child dancers aged 4 to 10 from the Soeryo Soemirat Dance Studio. Beksan Jaranan, an energetic and captivating horse dance, followed. Rooted in children’s games, the dance was performed by about 15 youngsters in an expressive and joyful manner. Senior Solo dancer Suprapto Soeryodharmo said the dance performances meant to open up Mangkunegara Palace to the public while at the same time introducing and preserving Javanese art and culture. As in previous years, the fourth event remained packed with hundreds of spectators. Apart from members of Soeryo Soemirat, dancers also came from the palace’s Langenprojo (court dance center) and the Mangkunegara Art Academy (ASGA). The Mangkunegara choreographic collection’s classical nature is rooted in palace traditions. At the Javanese classical level, all body parts from the hands, feet and neck to the head move as stipulated by palace criteria, in which certain motions have their own philosophical values.
